The author of this book first realized that he was an alcoholic after he was dead. He had collapsed and been brought to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead from an alcoholic convulsion. The diagnosis was wrong - but not by much, as Bill C. understood when he recovered as best he could from that latest attack. This distinguished lawyer and judge then began to understand that his addiction to alcohol was leading him to self-destruction. It was at that point that he went to his first meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous, where he began the struggle toward self-discovery.
In this profoundly moving book, the author shows how his association with A.A. helped him to discover the meaning of life and the truth about himself. In his comradeship with all types of people, in the talks that he gave and heard, in the help that he gave to and received from other alcoholics, he began to understand the central truth about alcoholism Alcohol comes in bottles, but alcoholism comes in people.
Looking back on his life with the insight brought to him by his work in A.A., he became aware that his alcoholism was not due to his inability to handle alcohol, but to his inability to handle himself—to his arrogant and egotistical attitudes, his thoughtless concern with material success, his lack of deep faith in a truly loving God. Through many struggles, many relapses, many longings for death, he began to be healed with the help of others.
A supreme crisis occurred with the death of his beloved daughter from the effects of her own alcoholism. But his growing self-strength and the many friends he had found in A.A. helped to pull him through. Aware of the importance of Alcoholics Anonymous in his life, he aptly describes it as by far the greatest program ever created for the treatment of alcoholism, and he offers this book as a contribution to its work.
His inspiring book will help many others work their way through the agony of alcoholism to self-recovery and face the truth at last. As the author says, “When I made the searching and fearless moral inventory, mindful of all of my character defects, mindful of all of my shortcomings that had shut off from me the power of the love of God, I knew then that I did have a world to conquer. The most important world of all worlds. I had to overcome myself.”

Some great stories, insights and revelations on what can come beyond getting sober.I will be going over the notes I made on my Kindle many times over as there are so many golden nuggets here about living life without the self-imposed bars of drinking jail.
Make no mistake, we are fully imprisoned as problem drinkers and this impassioned, interesting account of how and why we should escape is an adventurous, enlightened road map out - if we are willing to look at ourselves with ruthless honesty.
