All this in an effort to catch a boat to Australia to prospect for opals “as big as your thumb.”

I found "Finn, Again" to be true to the mood of the original "Huckleberry Finn" in its wild adventures, humor, and off-beat characters, and true to the spirit of Mark Twain in its playfulness and irreverence. And this incarnation has a little adult spice thrown in. Also, the author's love of the theater is apparent. One small incongruity the author's erudition often creeps into Huck's down-home vernacular, making his voice a little uneven. But my main disappointment was that it isn't twice as long! A fun read.
Who'd you like better Tom Sawyer or Huck Finn? For me, it's always been Finn. He's more philosophical, more down to earth. Here, in Finn Again, Doug Hundley has caught the spirit of Huck as an adult. Not that Twain needs anyone to explain his writings, but Hundley gives us a chance to mull over many of the magical moments from the original character and add nuance and deeper tones of the human condition.
There's also more humor and irony here. Hundley's work not only shows Huck older, it allows the reader to consider some of the readers' maturation -- in other words, it allows each of us to answer the question of how we have matured or mellowed or found peace and new-meaning in the some of the events from Huck's life.
If you liked Huckleberry Finn, treat yourself to a gentle sequel. Ask yourself how Tom Sawyer might have "grown up". I wonder what Hundley will write about next....
